Working with Document Briefs
There are two modes for working with Documents in a Matter in mattero: Documents mode and Briefs mode. Documents mode displays all Documents on a Matter, while Briefs mode displays all Documents assigned to a particular Brief, as well as a list of all Briefs on a Matter.
This article will demonstrate how to use both modes appropriately.
Creating Document Briefs
To create a new Document Brief:
- Select the Documents tab in a Matter, then select Documents Mode.
- Select New, then select New Brief.
- Enter a Name for the Brief, then select either Document Tags or Template.
- Make selections as needed from the menus that appear; when all selections have been made, select Save.

Adding Documents to an Existing Brief
To add existing Documents to a Brief:
- Select the Documents tab in a Matter, then select Documents Mode.
- Click on Documents to highlight them (use Ctrl/Shift + Click to select multiple Documents).
- Select the Actions button, then select Add to Existing Brief.
- Select a Brief, then select a Section to assign the Documents to from the dropdown menu that opens; if a Section is not selected, the Documents will be assigned to the Uncategorised section.
- When all selections are made, select OK.
Please note, any Documents already associated to a Brief will have this displayed in its "Brief" column in Documents mode.
Moving Documents Between Sections in a Brief
To move Documents from one section to another in a Brief:
- Select the Documents tab in a Matter, then select Briefs Mode.
- Click on Documents to highlight them (use Ctrl/Shift + Click to select multiple Documents).
- Select the Actions button, then select Move to Section and select a Section from the menu that opens.
Remove Documents from Section
If a Document is assigned to multiple Sections, it can be removed from one or more of these assignments.
To remove Documents from a Section:
- Select the Documents tab in a Matter, then select Briefs Mode.
- Select a Document's individual Actions menu, then select Brief and Remove from Section and select a Section to remove the Document from.
Removing Documents from a Brief
To remove Documents from a Brief:
- Select the Documents tab in a Matter, then select Briefs Mode.
- Click on Documents to highlight them (use Ctrl/Shift + Click to select multiple Documents).
- Select the Actions button, then select Remove Documents from Brief.
Please note, this will remove the Documents from a Brief, but these Documents will still be viewable in the Documents Mode view of the Matter.
Dragging and Dropping Documents into a Brief
Documents can also be added to a Brief from your device via drag and drop.
To do so:
- Select the Documents tab in a Matter, then select Briefs Mode.
- Select a Brief from the dropdown menu on the left-hand side.
- Open your device's file browser, select a file, then drag and drop the file into the Brief.
- In the File Upload window that appears, select a Section and Tags (or enter new Tags) as needed; if a Section is not selected, the Documents will be assigned to the Uncategorised section.
- When all selections are made, select Upload.
